I, Leoni Pirenne, am a scenographer, costume designer and visual artist.

My set and costume designs consist of clearly chosen colors, shapes and materials in which an overarching concept is the starting point. What recurs are tightly implemented color palettes with a strong sense of detail. Light and transformation play an important role in my scenographies. I am always looking for a development in time. These transformations often have a revealing or dismantling character. The imagination is broken down, revealed, awakened or slowly blown out.

My art consists of installations, video works, sculptural costumes and performances in both the white cube of a museum or the black box of a theater.

I combine temporary scenographic architectural constellations, neon lights and colors, plastic chairs and other mass-produced elements, with quotes from popular culture, theme parks and signs from the political and economic world. The artworks with these elements are raw and ambiguous; there is an ironic gloom in them. It is disturbing or this becomes it as time unfolds.

Fiction and reality blend together. With these artworks, I try to capture human concepts, put them into perspective and show their absurdity. Humor plays an important role in this.

In 2022 I won the Harry Wich Stipendium of the Cultuurfonds.

The jury report:

Leoni creates designs and performances that are aesthetically interesting and engaging, while at the same time her work critiques and questions the social environment. She shows guts, leadership and responsibility. That what she makes demonstrates a strong sense of theatrical tension in image and flow; they are designs that reveal, transform, disturb or become disturbing as time unfolds. She creates opportunities for herself and seeks collaborations. Leoni shows that she has developed a way of thinking and collaborating, constantly reflecting on artistic rules and references in the work, both individually and in collaborations. The jury calls Leoni fresh, contrary, sharp, clear and professional, a scenographer with her own handwriting. She takes care of everything to perfection, makes one curious and is enormously scenographic.
